London Christmas Mood

Romance_y_ 2026. 1. 5. 18:13

I woke up this morning to the sound of rain hitting my window, which honestly felt pretty normal for London in December.

But even before I got out of bed, I could tell the city was slowly shifting into Christmas mode.

There was something different in the air. Something warm, even though the weather was absolutely freezing.

I left the flat around 8, wrapped in my big coat and scarf.

And the first thing I noticed was the little cafe on the corner.

They`d finally put up their Chistmas menu.

The chalkboard outside said "Gingerbread Latte" and "Festive Toastie" and I swear the smell of cinnamon was already drifting out onto the street.

The barista was wearing one of those jumpers with a giant snowman on it.

She looked tired but cheerful, which is basically the London December vibe.

As I walked down the street, I saw more signs that the city was getting ready.

The small shops had started decorating thier windows with fairy lights and tiny fake snowflakes.

Nothing dramatic, just enough to make the street feel a bit brighter.

Even the local Tesco had shelves full of mince pies, chocolates and those massive tubs of biscuits that everyone buys for guests but ends up eating themselves.

On my way to the station, I passed a group of workers hanging up lights on the main road.

They were arguing about which cable wasn`t plugged in properly, and one of them shouted "Mate, it`s not that deep, just move the ladder".

Typical London energy, but honestly? seeing the lights made me smile.

Even half-finished, they already looked festive.

The station was packed as always, people rushing to work, wet umbrellas everywhere, one guy spilling his coffee because someone bumped into him.

But what stood out was the Christmas music coming from the bakery inside.

Not the classic, cheesy stuff, more modern, like the songs you hear on the radio now.

A little girl next me was humming along and kept pointing at the Christmas doughnuts shaped like tiny presents.

After work, I decided to walk through Oxford street instead of taking the bus.

I regretted it immediately because it was absolutely rammed, but the lights were worth it.

They`d switched them on last week, and the whole street looked magical.

Not movie-level magical, but enough to make you stop for a second and just stare.

You could feel the energy of everyone getting excited for the holidays, tourists taking pictures, Londoners pretending not to care but secretely enjoying it.

I popped into a shop to buy a small Christmas gift for my friend, nothing fancy, just something thoughtful.

The queue was ridiculous, but that`s normal this time of year.

The cashier looked like he was about to fall asleep standing up, poor guy.

December retail in London is no joke.

Walking home, I passed Covent Garden.

They`d put up the massive Christmas tree, all covered in red and gold decorations.

There was a street performer singing modern Christmas songs, and a crowd had gathered around him.

People were drinking hot chocolate out of paper cups, taking photos, lahghing.

For a moment,  everything felt calm and cozy, even with hundreds of people around.

When I finally got home, I made myself a cup of tea and sat by the window.

The rain had stopped, and I could see the reflection of Christmas lights from the street below.

London can be chaotic and loud and stressful this time of year, but it also feels warm in its own way.

Not the kind of warm you get from sunshine, but the kind that comes from people slowing down just a little, being kinder, and letting themselves enjoy the season.

Christmas hasn`t properly arrived yet, but the city is getting ready.

And honestly, I love watching it happen.

Every day something new appears; a decorated shop window, a Christmas market stall, a neighbor putting a wreath on their door.

It`s like the whole city is building the holiday piece by piece.

I don`t know why, but this year I feel more connected to it.

Maybe it`s because I`m paying more attention, maybe it`s just the mood.

But walking through London in December, seeing everything slowly light up, makes me feel like I`m part of something bigger, something cozy and comforting.

And even though it`s cold and dark by 4 in the afternoon, the lights make it feel brighter.

The city feels alive, and I can`t wait to see how it will look when Christmas actually arrives.
